THE NEWS 06-16-2010 Broussard Chamber of Commerce June Luncheon Review…
Broussard Chamber of Commerce June Luncheon Review… Charlie Buckles with Red-Flex, a mobile camera speed enforcement system, spoke at the Broussard Chamber of Commerce June luncheon. Since its inception in 2005, “it has been a great way to reduce public cost.” Buckles made a presentation last year to the City of Broussard showing how the program benefits the community. “Every year serious crashes occur injuring over 200,000, 170,000 serious injuries, in 13,000 crashes speeding was the factor. “Speeding is a behavior problem. Here’s a way to save people’s lives.” Photo Enforcement reduces side impacts, is an accident investigation resource, useful for traffic management and emergency response aid, and it utilizes the most advanced technology. Contrary to critic’s claims of “invasion of privacy” and “big brother is watching you,” the video footage and photography is run through a rigorous battery of steps designed to protect the individual’s privacy while enforcing speed limits and red light violations. Red Flex doesn’t get paid unless tickets are paid. It does not go against insurance it is a civil violation and may be contested at a justification hearing, at no cost. Red Flex is being utilized in Lafayette at 18 locations. In 15 months, they showed a 68% reduction in crashes, “think about that,” and 71% reduction from rear-end collisions. “It brought in $1.9 million in revenue for the city, its 100% maintenance is on us” If Broussard should go with the system 0% upfront cost.” New Louisiana state guidelines allow placing sensors at state intersections on Hwy 90.
